Training is in Calgary at a pre arranged facility.

About H2S gas:

Hydrogen Sulphide gas is also known as  H2S, Sour gas,  or stink damp.  It is a WHMIS Controlled product that is extremely poisonous to the public. In addition, it is a highly corrosive, flammable, explosive and toxic air pollutant. It is a deadly killer  with poor warning qualities, making it difficult for workers to locate with their own senses.  As a result, there have been many tragic consequences, causing numerous fatalities in the petroleum industry, pulp and paper mills, barges, pig farms, landfills, waste water treatment plants, and sewers.

Hydrogen sulphide gas  can naturally occur or be part of the manufacturing process and is prevalent in Alberta and many parts of western Canada.

H2S Alive FAQ

How much does h2s Alive cost?

The cost of this course is $145 plus $7.25 = $152.25 . Candidates receive their credit card receipt by email. They have the option of receiving their written receipt at the class or online.  The h2s ticket is issued immediately upon successful completion.

Do you have to be clean-shaven for h2s Alive?

It is not required as part of the program to be clean shaven. However, you may not fit the mask you will be wearing at the course, as it conforms better to a face that has no beard. Be aware that you will need to be clean shaven when you go to a field location and are expected to wear a respirator in an emergency situation.

How long is the h2s Alive course?

The course ranges from  6 to 8 hours.  The time depends on the size of the class, number of breaks, length of the lunch break and how long it takes the class to write the exam.

What is the difference between h2s Alive and h2s awareness?

H2S Alive is a franchised course by Energy Safety Canada and offered through Authorized Providers.  To be allowed entry to most oil and gas facilities, particularly in the upstream oil or gas sector, the only accepted course is H2S Alive. Workers must show their skills are competent in the class, such as donning SCBAs and conducting rescues.  Students must receive at least 70% on their exam.

H2S Awareness is a course designed to provide general awareness to workers who might have limited exposure to Hydrogen Sulphide gas but don’t enter typical petroleum sites in Alberta.

What is h2s certification?

H2S Alive, an Energy Safety Canada trademarked product, has been adopted as a standard for the petroleum industry. It has the most recognition in Western Canada as the school to provide training on hydrogen sulphide gas. As a result, most employers have a preference for employees and visitors or contractors with this certification.

What does h2s stand for?

Hydrogen sulfide gas.

H2S is the chemical name for hydrogen sulphide gas, which is a naturally occurring toxic gas that is found in Alberta and many other areas of the world.  It can be produced as a by-product of drilling, and is found in volcanic activity, and sulphur mountains as well as industries such as pulp and paper, mining, wastewater containment, and in sewers.  The H2S Alive program is a training session designed to make people aware of the dangers and properties of hydrogen sulfide gas.

How fast can h2s kill you?

H2S is called the “two second  knockdown”, as it is highly toxic to humans and other animal species.  It can cause the respiratory system to fail rapidly but can also affect the cardiovascular system and neurological system and cause pulmonary edema. Death can occur immediately above 700 ppm.  The IDLH or Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health limit of 100 ppm has been established Federally in Canada.

What does h2s smell like?

Hydrogen sulfide has a rotten egg smell.  Some common names for the gas include sewer gas, stink damp, swamp gas, sour gas, acid gas and manure gas. It occurs naturally in crude petroleum, natural gas, and hot springs and where anaerobic decomposition occurs. Why it is considered so dangerous is that people have a problem detecting the odor over a low odor threshold.  Once they lose the smell, they think that H2S has gone away.  In fact, it may be increasing in intensity
