Alberta Fall Protection Requirements
Under Alberta OHS Code Part 9, fall protection is mandatory when workers are exposed to a fall of 3 metres (10 feet) or more, into operating machinery, into water or other liquid, or into hazardous substances. Employers must complete a formal fall hazard assessment for every task at height and implement a written fall protection plan before work begins. WorkSafeBC applies similar rules with a 3-metre threshold.
The Alberta hierarchy of fall protection controls prioritises elimination first (redesign the task to avoid heights), then guardrails, safety nets, and finally personal fall arrest systems as the last line of defence.
Core Scaffolding Safety Construction Concepts Every Worker Should Know
- Free-fall distance: the maximum unrestricted fall must not exceed 1.8 metres (6 feet) with a shock-absorbing lanyard, or as calculated for the anchor point in use.
- Total fall clearance: anchor height + free-fall + deceleration distance + harness stretch + safety margin. Miscalculation is a leading cause of struck-ground fatalities.
- Anchor point strength: permanent anchors must support 22.2 kN (5,000 lbf) per attached worker or be designed by a professional engineer.
- Pre-use inspection: visual and tactile check of webbing (cuts, burns, fraying, chemical exposure), stitching, D-rings, buckles, and lanyard connectors before every shift.
- Suspension trauma: a suspended worker can suffer venous pooling and cardiac arrest within 10–20 minutes. Rescue plan is mandatory, not optional.
Who Needs Fall Protection Training
Roofers, ironworkers, scaffolders, oil & gas derrick and rig workers, wind turbine technicians, communications tower climbers, warehouse order-pickers using aerial platforms, arborists, window cleaners, and anyone using ladders above 3 metres. Alberta OHS requires training that includes hazard identification, equipment selection, inspection, safe use, and rescue procedures — delivered before the worker is first exposed to the fall hazard.
