Testing is conducted throughout to reinforce learning.
A certificate of completion is available to download and print for your records. A permanent certificate card is mailed to you.
A pass mark of 80% must be achieved to pass. Each participant is allowed two times to repeat the program to pass. Supplemental materials are necessary to complete this program. Access these online to use with the course. Participants can repeat the course twice if they do not achieve a pass mark.

WHMIS 2015 — Canada’s Hazard Communication Standard
WHMIS 2015 aligned Canadian workplace hazard communication with the Globally Harmonised System (GHS). Under the Hazardous Products Regulations, all suppliers of hazardous products must classify their products, prepare compliant Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and apply standardised supplier labels. Employers must ensure workers who use, handle, or may be exposed to hazardous products receive WHMIS training and workplace-specific instruction.
The Nine WHMIS Pictograms Workers Must Recognise
- Flame: flammables, self-reactives, pyrophorics, self-heating substances, organic peroxides
- Flame over circle: oxidisers
- Gas cylinder: gases under pressure
- Exploding bomb: explosives, self-reactives (type A/B), organic peroxides (type A/B)
- Corrosion: corrosive to metals, skin corrosion, serious eye damage
- Skull and crossbones: acute toxicity (categories 1–3)
- Health hazard: respiratory sensitisation, germ cell mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, target organ toxicity, aspiration hazard
- Exclamation mark: acute toxicity (category 4), skin/eye irritation, respiratory tract irritation, hazardous to ozone layer
- Environment (optional in Canada): aquatic toxicity
The 16 SDS Sections
Every Canadian Safety Data Sheet follows a standardised 16-section format: (1) identification, (2) hazard identification, (3) composition, (4) first-aid measures, (5) fire-fighting measures, (6) accidental release measures, (7) handling and storage, (8) exposure controls / PPE, (9) physical and chemical properties, (10) stability and reactivity, (11) toxicological information, (12) ecological information, (13) disposal, (14) transport information, (15) regulatory information, (16) other information.
Whmis — Employer Obligations
Employers must ensure SDSs for all hazardous products are current (updated within 90 days of new hazard information) and accessible to workers. Workplace labels are required when a product is decanted or when supplier labels become illegible. Worker training must be delivered before first exposure and reviewed annually or when workplace conditions change.
