COURSE OVERVIEW
Boom trucks are truck-mounted cranes that come in two main configurations, telescopic and knuckle (articulating) booms, and are used across construction, utility, and material delivery industries to lift and place heavy loads. Tip-overs, powerline contact, falling loads, and struck-by incidents are all real risks on a boom truck job site, and most serious incidents are preventable with the right knowledge and preparation. Build to Canadian standards, this course provides the foundational knowledge workers need to support safe boom truck operations, from understanding the equipment and its limits to planning lifts and responding in an emergency.
By the end of this course, learners should be able to:
- Identify the major hazards associated with boom truck operations
- Perform basic pre-use inspections and recognize unsafe equipment conditions
- Explain how stability, leverage, and outrigger setup affect tip-over risk
- Use safe setup practices, including cribbing and outrigger pads, to support lifting operations
- Apply lift planning basics, including load awareness, exclusion zones, and communication roles
- Describe safe operating practices to prevent struck-by injuries and dropped loads, and
- Recognize when conditions are unsafe and follow general emergency response procedures
