WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) is Canada’s national standard for hazard communication in the workplace. Under the Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR), every Canadian employer must ensure workers who use, handle, or may be exposed to hazardous products receive WHMIS training. The current standard, WHMIS 2015 (aligned with the Globally Harmonized System, GHS), remains the active federal system in 2026.
What WHMIS covers
- Hazard classification: physical hazards (flammable, oxidizing, gas under pressure, self-reactive) and health hazards (acute toxicity, skin corrosion, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity).
- Pictograms: 10 standardized symbols (flame, exclamation mark, health hazard, skull and crossbones, corrosion, gas cylinder, environment, exploding bomb, flame over circle, biohazard).
- Labels: supplier labels (required on containers when shipped) and workplace labels (used when products are decanted or containers replaced).
- Safety Data Sheets (SDS): the 16-section standardized document with detailed handling, storage, first-aid, and disposal information for each hazardous product.
- Worker training: generic WHMIS training plus workplace-specific training on the actual products in use.
Who needs WHMIS training
WHMIS training is required for any Canadian worker who works with or near a hazardous product. This includes oil and gas workers, construction crews, industrial and manufacturing workers, warehouse staff, laboratory technicians, healthcare workers, cleaners, and janitorial staff. It also applies to supervisors of workers who handle hazardous products.

Is WHMIS training legally required in Canada?

How long is a WHMIS certificate valid?
WHMIS certificates typically do not have a fixed expiry date under federal law, but most Canadian employers require annual refresher training and updates whenever new hazardous products are introduced or when the worker’s duties change.
What is the difference between WHMIS 1988 and WHMIS 2015?
WHMIS 1988 was Canada’s original hazard communication standard, using 8 hazard symbols and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). WHMIS 2015 aligned Canada with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), introducing 10 pictograms, standardized 16-section Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and standardized signal words (“Danger” or “Warning”). WHMIS 2015 remains the current national standard in 2026.
Do I need generic WHMIS or workplace-specific WHMIS?
You need both. Generic WHMIS covers the classification system, pictograms, labels, and SDS format. Workplace-specific WHMIS covers the actual hazardous products in your workplace, how to handle them safely, and how to respond to spills or exposures. Only your employer can provide the workplace-specific portion.
